How do you read a tide table?
Read a tide table by checking its location, date, time zone, height units and reference level before reading the high and low water entries. Those entries predict water levels at the stated station; they do not give safe walking or crossing times. Check current weather, local access notices and the responsible authority's route guidance separately. If a route depends on interpreting an uncertain tidal window, choose another route.
This guide uses NOAA's United States terminology to explain the fields. Other countries and publishers may use different settings and height references. It is a reading guide for shore-based visitors, not navigation instruction or a method for calculating when a beach, causeway or harbor structure is safe to cross.
Which location should the table describe?
Begin with the location recommended by the responsible local authority for the route, rather than selecting a familiar harbor name. NOAA's station search supports names, station identifiers and geographic coordinates.
Keep the station name and identifier beside your saved information. Our practical rule is to avoid a screenshot containing only the curve: another traveler should be able to identify where the predictions apply.
Do not assume the closest map marker supplies the correct conditions for a separate inlet or shoreline segment. If the route guidance does not identify an appropriate source, ask the land manager, harbor authority or qualified local guide. Do not invent a time adjustment from a neighboring station.
Also distinguish a tide prediction from a water-level observation. NOAA's product descriptions separate calculated tide predictions, measured water levels and model-based coastal forecast guidance. A table for next weekend is not an observation of next weekend's conditions.
What do the date and time settings mean?
Check the full date, including year, and the clock format before copying a time. A saved table from a previous trip is not the departure check for this trip.
The NOAA prediction help defines three time-zone options:
- LST/LDT: local time with daylight-saving adjustment where applicable.
- LST: local standard time without daylight-saving adjustment.
- GMT: Greenwich Mean Time.
It also offers a choice between an AM/PM clock and a 24-hour clock. A display of 18:55 means 6:55 PM, not 6:55 AM. That conversion changes the clock notation, not the time zone.
For a local outing, choose the intended local-time setting where the service provides one and verify the resulting heading. Do not manually add a daylight-saving adjustment to a display that has already applied it. If copying a time into a calendar, check the calendar's location and time zone too.
Save enough of the table to retain adjacent dates. An entry just after midnight belongs to the next calendar day; it is not a late-evening entry on the date above it. If the source's formatting is unclear, return to the original dated display rather than guessing.
What does the tide height measure?
A height needs both a unit and a reference. NOAA's interface can display feet or meters. The datum is the reference elevation from which a height is measured.
One common NOAA label is MLLW, or Mean Lower Low Water. NOAA defines this using the average of each tidal day's lower low water over its tidal datum epoch. It is not simply a synonym for mean sea level. See NOAA's tidal datum definitions.
A negative height means below the table's stated reference level. It does not mean a negative water depth, an empty harbor or a dry footpath. Likewise, a positive value does not tell you the water's depth over an unidentified surface.
For comparison, keep units, station and datum consistent. Do not compare an MLLW value with an unrelated land-elevation figure and infer clearance above a path. Establishing the relationship between those references is technical work, not a visual estimate for a visitor to make.
Can you practice with a fictional table?
This is an invented reading exercise, not real tide data. It has no actual station, travel date or usable crossing information. Assume all entries belong to one fictional day, use a 24-hour local-time clock, and give heights in meters relative to MLLW.

Three questions test what the table actually says.
First, which high water is higher? The evening entry, by 3.1 minus 2.8 = 0.3 m. The two high-water entries are not identical.
Second, what is the difference between the morning high and the listed low? It is 2.8 minus (-0.2) = 3.0 m. Subtracting a negative value increases the difference. That is a difference between two predicted levels, not a statement about the depth over a walking surface.
Third, when is the listed low water? At 12:40 in the exercise's local-time system. The answer is not "the route is open at 12:40." No information about route elevation, waves, barriers, exits or permitted access appears in the exercise.
Do not use interpolation, a fixed number of hours around low water, or these sample heights to generate a safe-access window. The exercise ends with reading the entries correctly. A real route decision requires the relevant authority's current, location-specific guidance.
Why can actual water levels differ?
NOAA's prediction-accuracy FAQ explains that its astronomical tide predictions do not predict the effects of wind, rain, freshwater runoff and other short-term weather events. Actual conditions can differ from the predicted tide.
Before departure, consult the current official weather forecast and relevant coastal warnings, then check local closures and instructions. Do not treat a favorable-looking tide entry as a reason to disregard an unfavorable warning.
Where a source provides observed water levels, check the observation's timestamp and location. An old or distant observation does not establish conditions at your intended path. Our planning approach is to record uncertainty explicitly: "current local conditions not confirmed" is a reason to change the outing, not a blank to fill with an estimate.
Does low tide mean weak or absent currents?
No. Tide height and current describe different aspects of the water. NOAA's tides-versus-currents explanation distinguishes the vertical rise and fall of tides from the movement described by currents.
Slack water means little or no horizontal water movement. NOAA's FAQ on tides and tidal currents warns that assuming slack water coincides with high or low tide does not hold for most locations. Tide and tidal-current predictions are separate products.
For a shore visitor, the practical limit is clear: do not infer safe swimming, wading, boating or equipment access from a high/low tide table. Those activities need their own current, weather, local-rule and specialist safety assessments. Stay on the designated public route.
What should go on a pre-walk information card?
Use this as a collection checklist, not a permission checklist. A completed card cannot override a closure or changing conditions.
Record:
- The route authority and its current access notice.
- The tide source, station name and identifier.
- The trip date, time zone, clock format, units and datum.
- Relevant high/low entries copied with their dates.
- Current weather and coastal warnings, with the time checked.
- The authorized return route and a separate alternative.
- A named access point and the appropriate local emergency contact.

The RNLI's coastal-walking advice recommends checking weather and tides, telling someone your route and expected return, and carrying a means of calling for help. Keep that means accessible rather than relying solely on a screenshot.
When should you abandon the tidal part of a route?
Do not enter a closed or uncertain section. Seek current route-specific advice from the responsible authority; when it remains unresolved, use a confirmed alternative or postpone. Never bypass a barrier because a table suggests low water.
The RNLI's tide-risk guidance explains that rising water can block the return around a rocky outcrop or into another cove. Moving farther up the beach may not provide an escape. This is why a high-water time is not a return deadline.
If you become cut off or see someone in difficulty, contact the local emergency service promptly and give the location; do not attempt an improvised water crossing. In the UK, the RNLI directs callers to 999 and the Coastguard. Confirm the appropriate procedure elsewhere before the visit.
